BLACK VELVET (Growing Up) is an animated coming-of-age origin story that follows the unlikely friendship between Maggie Black and Amara Velvet, from their high school years through college and into their first steps in the corporate world.
Maggie Black is a beautiful, tomboyish firecracker raised by her hardworking single father on the south side of Atlanta. Grease-stained hands, backyard engine repairs, and blue-collar values shaped her into someone who believes in honesty, hard work, and standing up for the underdog. But beneath her toughness lies a simmering anger at the unfairness she sees everywhere—rich versus poor, powerful versus powerless, and a world that seems rigged no matter your race, background, or circumstances. Her quick temper and strong sense of justice often get her into trouble, forcing her to learn that not every battle can be won with fists and determination alone.
Amara Velvet lives in an entirely different world. Born into the wealth and influence of Velvet Enterprise, one of Atlanta's most prestigious private equity and risk investment firms, she was raised among boardrooms, charity galas, and conversations about leverage, acquisitions, and power. Her father believes that capital controls the world and that every problem has a financial solution. Yet Amara longs for something more authentic. Intelligent, creative, and fiercely independent, she rejects the carefully planned future waiting for her and dreams of making her own name outside of the Velvet dynasty.
As long as these two young women together, their friendship has become an unlikely collision of worlds. Maggie teaches Amara how to live without fear of failure, while Amara opens Maggie's eyes to opportunities and perspectives she'd never considered. Together they navigate first loves, family expectations, social pressures, college ambitions, and the painful realization that adulthood isn't as simple as they imagined.
As they enter their first corporate careers, the ideals that once united them are put to the test.
At its heart, BLACK VELVET (Growing Up) is a story about friendship, class, identity, and the difficult journey of defining success on your own terms. It's the story of two young women from opposite ends of Atlanta society who discover that family isn't always blood, power isn't always money, and sometimes change happens in ways you never expected or planned for.
